YuKai Bao’s practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and counseling.  In addition, Ms. Bao has substantial experience preparing and prosecuting patents in the electrical and software industries, including in machine learning, content recognition, telecommunications, and robotics.  

Prior to joining Desmarais LLP, Ms. Bao attended law school while working full-time as a patent agent at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP. During this time, she co-authored an amicus brief relating to artificial intelligence and inventorship and participated in a mock American Invents Act (AIA) trial proceeding before a panel of judges from the Patent Trial and Appeal Board’s (PTAB) as part of the PTAB’s Legal Experience and Advancement Program (LEAP).

Prior to law school, Ms. Bao worked as an engineering intern at Whirlpool Corporation, where she explored applications for sensors in household applications and is listed as an inventor on a patent. She also worked as a research assistant exploring renewable energy generators and their applications. During her time in undergrad, she was President of the Purdue IEEE Student Branch, where she volunteered for and expanded children’s outreach programs to encourage interest in STEM.
