For example, on the trial front, in October 2024, Mr. Gu was part of the trial team that secured a complete defense verdict of non-infringement for a leading consumer electronics company, defeating the plaintiff’s claim for $361 million in damages. Mr. Gu successfully argued key evidentiary issues during the morning colloquies before Judge Albright, including the admissibility of the defendant's expert’s invalidity testimony.
In November 2024, Mr. Gu was part of the trial team that defended Google’s Street View against claims it infringed the telepresence patents of plaintiff Kewazinga. Mr. Gu led the mock cross preparation for Google’s witnesses and the nightly disclosures. The case settled shortly after opening statements.
In August 2024, Mr. Gu was part of the trial team that defended Motorola Mobility against claims it infringed the battery savings patents of plaintiff SEVEN Networks. Mr. Gu presented at the mock and helped prepare Motorola’s trial witnesses. The case settled shortly before jury selection.
Mr. Gu also maintains an active pro bono practice. He has represented indigent clients in § 1983 civil rights litigation, in litigation alleging violation of the ADA, and for domestic violence victims.
Before joining Desmarais LLP, Mr. Gu was a litigation associate in the San Francisco office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan.
