The New York Law Journal has selected Desmarais LLP as a finalist for the Intellectual Property Litigation Department of the Year award and honored partner Kerri-Ann Limbeek as a Rising Star in the 2024 New York Legal Awards.
The awards highlight the leading law firms and attorneys in New York for their professional excellence and successes during the last 18 months. Desmarais LLP’s recent wins include securing $429.5 million in total damages for the biotech firm Ravgen and its prenatal genetic testing patent. The firm won a $57 million verdict for Ravgen in January 2024 after a weeklong trial led by Limbeek against Natera. That victory followed a $272.5 million jury verdict against Labcorp, which was later enhanced to $372.5 million in May 2023. The firm also defeated 10 inter partes review challenges to Ravgen’s patent before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
Other Desmarais LLP victories include a complete defense win for Intel in February 2023 that eliminated multibillion-dollar patent infringement claims relating to the chipmaker’s central processing units and a trial victory for OPEX in March 2023 before the International Trade Commission that halted a rival from the further importation and sale of competing automation systems in the U.S.
Limbeek’s Rising Star award recognizes her work managing Ravgen’s patent licensing and litigation campaign, which began in 2020. The litigation has spanned eight patent infringement lawsuits in the district courts and several challenges before the Patent Office. During that period, Limbeek earned a win in her first time as lead trial counsel against Natera; served as second chair in the trial victory against Labcorp; and reached settlements with other diagnostic entities.
The New York Law Journal’s 2024 awards presentation will take place on September 5 at Chelsea Piers in New York City.
