Desmarais LLP founding partner John Desmarais was invited to join the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, a group that recognizes elite trial attorneys from across the globe.
The organization, founded in 1954, limits its membership to 500 actively practicing trial attorneys in the United States and includes attorneys from nearly 40 other countries. The International Academy of Trial Lawyers seeks to highlight attorneys who have achieved significant victories in court while representing plaintiffs and defendants, before juries and at bench trials, and in district court and on appeal. The organization is invitation-only and selects members based on peer review and analysis of their track record in court.
During his career, Desmarais has secured several blockbuster courtroom victories including a $1.52 billion win for Alcatel-Lucent against Microsoft in 2007, one of the largest patent infringement verdicts on record; a $258 million defense victory for Cisco in a patent infringement suit brought by VirnetX in 2013; an $82.5 million jury verdict for IBM over Groupon in 2018; and a $400 million settlement payout to Cisco from Arista that ended an antitrust lawsuit in 2018.
