Desmarais LLP today announced that Leslie Spencer has joined the firm as a partner in its New York City office, effective March 31, 2020. Ms. Spencer will focus on patent litigation in the technology sector.

With the addition of Ms. Spencer, Desmarais LLP has 15 partners and 60 total attorneys. The intellectual property litigation firm was founded by John Desmarais in New York City in 2010 and opened its second office in San Francisco in 2019. The firm handles patent, trade secret, trademark, copyright, antitrust and other competition disputes spanning a range of technologies, including computer hardware and software, pharmaceuticals, biotech, and medical device litigation.
Ms. Spencer is a registered patent attorney who has spent more than 20 years litigating intellectual property cases and counseling clients. She has represented plaintiffs and defendants in disputes in federal court and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, including in inter partes review proceedings. She has represented major U.S. and multinational companies in disputes involving computer software, artificial intelligence, automotive technology, financial technology, blockchain, network communications, encryption and security protocols, semiconductor design and manufacturing, medical devices, and healthcare information technology. She is also a frequent speaker and has authored numerous articles on blockchain, artificial intelligence, and other topics.

Ms. Spencer received a J.D. degree from New York University, a LL.M. in trial advocacy from Temple University, an MBA from the University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ms. Spencer spent nearly a decade as a partner at Ropes & Gray LLP where she served as co-chair of the firm’s diversity committee. She was also named one of New York Law Journal’s 30 “Top Women in Law 2016” and has been listed among New York Metro Super Lawyers since 2013.
